An Annoying Habit

February 12, 2010

I’ve got this friend and he has an annoying habit.

I think I am quite bright. I am certainly quick on the uptake. But he always feels he needs to explain things to me in great detail, and then he repeats what he saying a couple more times just to make sure I understand. He makes his point nice and clearly, and often what he says is interesting and useful. But I do wish he would say it only once.

Do you see what I am saying here? He always repeats things to me, often when I am on the phone to him or I am in a hurry. The second time he usually makes the same points but in a different order and at even greater length. Its like he’s explaining something to a child. Maybe he is worried I didn’t hear him or understand him, but he should really know by now that I am not stupid, and I’m actually very quick to get the jist of what other people are saying.

I just want to check that you have really understood my point. I nearly always get his drift the first time he says something. We are on the same wavelength. But just when I think he has said enough, he goes through it all once more, even more slowly, just to make sure that I have fully taken everything on board. Then he asks me to confirm that I have understood.

Do you see what I am saying here?
